Family Fun - Birthday Parties

Children have no idea how much we moms put into planning and holding their birthday parties. No matter how exhausting it was getting done, it is always worth it when they have a fantastic time at their party. Here are few tips to make getting it all done easier on you.

* Plan ahead…and don’t procrastinate-By planning ahead, you can allow yourself time to get everything done. Start at least a month ahead of time. Write down everything you need in a notebook and schedule time to get the decorations, invitations, food and presents. Make sure you stick to it. If you do it a little at a time, it will be easy.

* Choose a party time that works – If the children are young, try to plan around naptimes. If they are a bit older, parties that last from 1-3pm or 2-4pm work well. You can hold the party when everyone has energy and the party will end before they are exhausted and cranky. This becomes less of a problem as the children get into elementary school. At that age, you will be more likely to need to plan around their sports and activities.

* Include details on the invitations - Make the invitations as clear as possible.  If you are inviting the child only, inviting him by name is completely acceptable.  If you want the parents to come or are allowing the child to bring a sibling as a guest, state that as well.  And if the type of party you're having requires a certain type of dress, as in the case of a costume party or a pool party, be sure to include that.

*Ask for and accept help- Involve grandparents and other family member to help run the party. It will help the party go more smoothly. If the children are young, invite the other parents to stay. You won’t have to worry about how another person’s child is going to react to a new situation and extra sets of eyes are always a big help.

If anyone offers to help you get ready, say yes! You will be able to get the decorating and food ready twice as fast. It will make the last minute details so much less stressful. Don’t forget to send a thank you note when the party is over so they know how much it meant to you.

*Cheat on the food- Most grocery stores have sandwich and fruit plates that you can order. You can even look at Costco which has amazingly good food. That way, you will have more time to make the cake and fewer worries about getting all of the food ready. If you get a cake from a bakery, you will have even more time
