It is that time of year again when we all promise to shed those pounds and eat right. Instead of trying a new diet, try making a few simple changes to help you eat healthier and live a healthy lifestyle.• Do not rely on energy bars and drinks. Although they are fine every once in a while, they do not provide a balanced diet. It is better to plan ahead and bring along healthy snacks such as cheese sticks, vegetable juice, fruit or a healthy wrap. • Do not skip breakfast Skipping breakfast is never a good idea. You will give your metabolism a jump start by eating breakfast early. This will help lead to better weight loss. You also will prevent feeling constantly hungry throughout the day. • Be careful with low carb diets Your body needs carbohydrates for your muscles and the storing of energy. Your body changes when you are on a low carb diet. While you may lose weight on the diet, if you go back to your old eating habits, you may gain weight more rapidly. • Regular exercise does not mean eat anything Eating healthy and exercising doesn't give you an all access pass to eat anything you want. Everyone needs the same nutrients whether they exercise or not, as well as fruits and vegetables. A well balanced diet will be much better for you and enjoy treats in moderation. • Do not forget the treats If you feel you need to deny yourself all of your favorite snacks, you will surely fail. Do allow yourself treats in moderation. It is fine to enjoy your favorite foods occasionally and yes, have that piece of chocolate now and then. • Eat enough for energy Although losing weight involves eating fewer calories, losing it too quickly is never safe. What you should do, is aim for 1 - 2 pounds a week. Always make sure that you are getting enough calories to keep your body operating smoothly. If you start dropping weight too fast, feeling tired or are starving all the time, eat a bit more food. • Skip soda and alcohol. Water is the best drink for active people. You should at least eight glasses a day, and not rely on thirst to be an indicator. By the time you get thirsty, your body is already running a bit too low. If you don’t like plain water, try flavoring it. • Consult with a nutritionist or trainer If you are able to do so, they can be invaluable resources. You can learn your actually body mass and tailor a nutritional plan for your needs. Take what you have learned from them and continue to apply to your daily lifestyle changes to help you realize your goal. • Don’t give up If you have an off day or week, do not give up on your goal. We are human and therefore, not perfect. Keep in mind what you are working towards and don’t beat yourself over the little stuff. |
