View Full Version : Vacations with family?
Anyone else do this?
If so which family do you go with? Is it for your main vacation?
Also is their any specific reason you vacation with them?
Every year David and I vacation with my parents, we only really afford 1 vacation a year in the summer and we head to the beach (already booked for this year although for the first year we've had to book 2 blocks of accomodation as we've outgrown the biggest we could find to share with them LOL)
We go with my parents as my mother is a very involved grandparent and enjoys spending as much time as she can with the kids as her own parents died young without having much time with my sister and i (their only grandkids) my kids are my parents only grandchildren. My parents also take a vacation into Europe/the canaries or greece each year too without us for their grown up vacation but they like a week playing in the sand with my kids. Also having 4 kids- 3 under 4 it's a biiiiig help having the extra eyes and hands whilst they are all so little as it means Chase doesn't have to do all "baby" stuff- we can divide for her to do more age appropriate stuff with an extra pair of adults with us.
We also have plans for an annual vacation with David's sisters and allllllll the kids to give the kids a weekend/week away with their cousins as they don't always get to spend much time together.
We don't vacation with my sister as my sister lives AT the coast so visiting her is a vacation for us :lmao

We go to Budapest with my parents though always stay on to have time to ourselves. It is much easier seeing my relations with my dad there to translate LOL
This summer we are also going to Croatia to stay on my dads boat for a week. He offered to pay for us to go so we decided, why not? Plus I knew that James wanted a holiday on the boat so I agreed. We are going the Saturday after Sasha's birthday and my parents are already dying for it and to be with Sasha on her first sun holiday LOL
sounds fabulous! Enjoy every second of it- my sister has decided to have her wedding 08-08-08 and that means David will be in disney for his 30th birthday which is 7th august! (to say he is chuffed is the least i can tell you!)

LOL But what a cool date for Bob's wedding!
Ah my 30th is next Feb and I'm already thinking of the big party I intend having. I shall be dropping HUGE HUGE detailed hints to my darling hubby throughout the year :giggle
if he's anything like David give him a detailed list of instructions or give it to a close female friend as David is rather useless at taking hints without a "do this NOW and call it a surprise" initiative.
Bob has been looking at some rather large "Beka may well keel over in florida heat wearing this" style dresses for me according to my father

I really don't think there's anyone in the family that we'd enjoy going on vacation with. Camping with Dave's parents would be fun, but other than that - nah.
In the past we've met my parents in Vegas and it was fun. I wouldn't mind doing something else with them but they aren't big travelers. My mom would always go but my dad is a killjoy AND refuses to fly so there's not much we can plan with them.

Dear me, no!
We live near both sides of the family, so when we go on vacation, we kinda like to get away. I love my family, but I think it would be complicated to figure out what everyone wanted to do. It's nice and simple with just the six of us.
and as far as Steve's family goes, not even he would want to spend a week with them. :giggle

My mother tries to plan a trip every couple months. She's crazy. We do end up going to some waterpark resort (her favourite) every couple of years though. Dh usually stays behind "working" because he can't stand the chaos of my mother, father, my sister (with Down's), me and our two kids, my sister, her husband and her two kids and my other sisters kid. Did I mention my four year old son is the oldest? Its absolutely nuts but it makes my mother happy so we give in every once in awhile.

Brian's family spends a week in North Carolina (on the beach) over the 4th of July. Quite honestly, I don't get it.
In my whole childhood, we vacationed ONCE with extended family. It was okaaaay.
I mean... it's not only his parents -- but grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, everyone. And... okay, his extended family are ALL very close, and I think that's great:thumbsup
But. Do I want to VACATION with my In Laws? Um. No thanks.
I forgot to mention that when MIL was alive we went lots of places with her and FIL. It's not so much that we were purposely trying to do it to spend time together -- we would travel around to OU football games and they liked doing that, too, so we'd often end up going together, or meeting up there once we got there. It was always fun because we didn't spend every waking second together or anything. We saw each other at the game and usually had dinner together and then we were off doing our own thing the rest of the time.
MIL's family also gets together every summer at some resort somewhere. We haven't gone since she died but we used to go and I thought it was nice. I mean, what's so weird about wanting to see people you don't normally see? Unless you just dislike everyone in the family. But most people don't have the time or ability to run around the country and individually visit every family member they'd like to see so reunions at a central point are great for that. We used to get together with my mom's side of the family every year and I'm bummed it doesn't happen anymore because I now haven't seen a lot of those people in years and years.

I mean, what's so weird about wanting to see people you don't normally see? I don't think there is anything weird about it :) Just my personal preference, when I go on vacation with the kids, or with Brian -- I want us to be able to focus on each other, and adding extended family into the mix -- IN OUR CASE ONLY -- is stressful and not at all fun.
wow- honestly didn't realise it was this unusual to go away with family other than to visit with them but then again i suppose IRL we're probably the only family that vacations with extended family.
My sister is odd- we're all sharing at least half her honeymoon with her at her request, now that i find odd- mine was invaded by grieving family when grandad died but i certainly wouldn't have invited them

We haven't yet but plan to eventually.
I would be okay with taking a vacation with my Father and Mother in law as we all get on well.
One of my sister in laws I could handle but the other would drive me insane
I would love to take a vacation with my family but I think that my youngest brother would drive Tim mad. He could barely handle the 4 days they were here visting us in Dec. I usually go to their house on my own with the kids so he has not been around him much the last 3/4 yrs and he really got on his nerves (just typical nine year old behavior that he can expect from our kids when they are that age but as the youngest child of his family Tim doesn't realize that. :) )
BUt we do plan on going camping with my parents and siblings this summer
And to the beach with SIL. I am just hoping he does not feel it necessary to invite SIL2.

Oh since i Did not really answer any of the questions. If we do it will not be our main family vacation. That will be just Tim and the kids and I. And I would make sure we got some time as a family no matter how many people went.

OMGosh we love vacations with my family!! That includes my parents, my sister, her dh and my two nieces. We try to take vacation all together at least once a year. Couple years ago we rented caravan and went all to Norway for one week. It was AWESOME!! This summer we are planning to go to Sweden to Safari or Paris, Disneyland. I love those times we spend together traveling :D

We go on vaca with my family about once a year. It's been disney every year, but this year we're supposed to be going to Mexico. I see AJ every single day, so I have no problems vacationing with other people. It's fun... and I love my family :)
