View Full Version : When you TTC, do you plan around
the birthday cut off for the school year? Does it matter to you? Do you avoid certain months because of it?

When we were TTC, we didn't think about anything other than having a baby. Didn't matter when as long as it happened.
I have a friend who does not want winter babies and with her first planned it so that her DD was born in the spring. Lucky for her it worked out like she hoped. She says she plans to have a June baby next time. I told her winter babies weren't that bad as I've had two and they were healthy and just as much fun as the other two I had in late summer. :)

We didn't ttc but I was very glad Madison was born when she was...although 6 weeks later could have worked too. I only had to work 4 weeks after my 6 week Mat leave and then had the whole summer off....plus it wasn't too hot either. A co-worker was ttc and tried for the same time of the year, but were hoping to avoid graduation, as she had been with this ONE student since 7th grade and she graduated June 6th...the baby was born the 3rd via c-section so graduation was missed...but the student understood, got to go and see the baby and was cool with it as other staff members attended in the new momma['s place.

Planning? What is that?

The only one we planned was Sonia, and I chose to TTC in June merely because I prefer to be huge in the winter and not in the summer. :p Since we homeschool, grade cutoff isn't an issue anyways.
The one time we actually were TTC, that never occurred to me. Funnily enough, that was the child for whom the cutoff actually became an issue. Fortunately we have a reasonable school district who actually listened to us and we were able to get Madalyn into school a year early, so it all worked out.
JZ is to the younger end of his class (birthday two months before cutoff date) and probably would've been better off if he'd been born after Sept. 1st so that he wouldn't be starting kindy till next year. Eliza is dead in the middle of the 'year' (age cutoff is in Sept. and Eliza was born in March) but I don't expect we'll have any issues with her one way or the other.
It never occurred to us. We're homeschooling now, so it doesn't really matter. Liam would have had to have been born almost 2 months earlier to get into kindergarten the year before he did. He really should have gone then, but our district is uncooperative. Aidan is a late September birthday, but our cut off isn't until December. If for some reason we're back in public school in a couple of years, I think there's a good chance I'd keep him home another year, unless his developmental path changes considerably between then and now.

It never occurred to us to plan for the school year. The last two weren't planned (by us) at all, so it wasn't even close to an issue!
If I could have chosen, though, I would have had all my babies in the summer. My two winter babies were in and out of the hospital with respiratory problems in their early months
We planned to fit in babies around the academic calendar so I would be able to minimize the impact on my ability to do grad school. It worked both times pretty much. Olivia was born in early May, which was finals week I had already gotten all my work done, so it was ok. Elliot was late July. And he is one of those kids who's a little not quite ready for kindy, so we're shelling out for one year of private school for him to get him ready.
