We left around midnight and around 6 am the "check engine" light came on. Our air bag light also came on (there is a loose contector to where the side airbags would be if we had them - no big deal) so we assumed it just set the check engine light off. We still stopped and Sean checked everything out. It all seemed fine so we continued to drive with no issues...until 9:45 at night when we heard what sounded like a gun shot and the truck started rattling. We pull over and Sean looks to see what's up and calls a tow and his mom to pick us up. (Fortunately we were only about 45 minutes from their house.) When the tow got there the guy told us that it sounded like a spark plug had blown out of the engine and that he'd call us on Monday. We finally got an estimate Wednesday evening and were FREAKING out! He told us he couldn't guarantee that we'd be able to leave on Sunday. Fortunately it took less work and therefore less time and money. We were able to pick the truck up on Friday as we hoped.
What was wrong with the truck??? The guy was right, a spark plug got lose and shot out of the engine. It stripped the sleeve amd caused another plug to losen up. Unfortunately this is a common problem with Ford but they haven't fixed it obviously.
We left on Sunday around 11:30 pm. We had only been on the road for about 4 hours when I woke up to Sean cussing. He was freaked! I asked what was wrong and he said he couldn't get the truck to stop! He was standing on the brake with both feet but the engine kept accelerating. He was finally able to get it pulled to the side of the interstate by turning the engine off. We weren't sure what was wrong. The peddle wasn't stuck or anything. We were near a toll and a guy told Sean to check if the cable attached tot he throttle was frozen and to see if he could shake it lose. That did it and we were off again! ....until an hour and a half later when it started happening again. He shook it lose again; and I suggested not using the cruise control, that maybe it just wasn't releasing as it should. (this is another common thing- it's been recalled and we're taking it in again for it) We are assuming that was the problem cause we didn't have any more problems with it after that.
The check engine light came on in Kentucky. (Are you laughing yet???) We pulled off at the next exit and stopped at a garage. The guy told us it was the thermastat and it just need to be replaced but that we could easily get home without any issues with it. The rest of the trip home went well though we were nervous the entire way and have decided to rent cars for long trips from now on!
Onto the next post for the fun stuff!
