My two year old has a significant speech delay. He was tested by early intervention and he is progressing normally except for things that involve speech, he is in the one percentile.
We have been working and working and he has been saying a few things (trying) but he doesn't use his tongue when he talks. It's all back of the throat or lip noises, so it's usually really unclear. BUT we have been doing those baby babble movies and he is picking up some of the signs. So NOW I really want to learn to sign and have tried to get some signing movies on netflix but it is a wait on them. (so I can see if they are worth purchasing)
Has anyone learned to sign via dvd? If so which one did you use?
Thanks ladies. I did not see this forum here and I am glad it is. :) My middle son has ADD also. So I have two kids for this board.

We have used the Signing Time DVDs. They are wonderful for hearing children (I have no idea how or if they'd be useful for a deaf child) because they involve really catchy (annoyingly catchy, to be honest) songs with signing. My kids love the DVDs, and all of them have picked up a pretty fair number of signs from them.
I haven't tried any others, but those ones are faboo! I hope you find something that works for you.

Hi and welcome. I'm a middle school aged teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, so I deal with sign language EVERYDAY.... THere are several sign dictionaries that have videos with them for research purposes, but they aren't for the kids to sit down and watch...HOwever, that being said, the more you would sign while you're speaking yourself, that will help you child pick up the sign to word relationship.
I'm not sure where you live, but you might want to check out a local university or college, or Deaf school, to see if they have a sign course that you could take (often they allow parents and other family members trying to learn sign languge to audit the course, just to learn the information without the tests/grades)...an Intermediate unti might too...Our IU has a basic sign language class EVERY spring. PM me if you'd like and I'll try to find those dictionaries' names. I'm home on medical leave for a few days and they are at school..
I'm not familiar with these videos, but is there a video store near you that night have the copies that you could view??? Or those other place might have something too.
:hugs good luck getting answers

I haven't used them but I know Discovery Toys has some DVDs. I've heard that they're very good. I have been signing since I was about 12 so I have been teachingthe kids on my own since they were bitty.
Best of luck!

I will second Signing Times. I like it best because the songs are annonyingly catchy so if you sit through them, you'll learn the signs with your child. You just can't help it. LOL It is also ASL and not baby signs so if sign becomes a life long need or interest, they or you already have the foundation.
