Are there any stories behind the names in your family? Is anybody names after someone?

I was Mui Katherine. Mui is evidently a common Vietnamese name that means "younger daughter" "plum blossom" or "salt" depending on who you ask. (BTW, "salt" is considered a good thing as life would be very bland with no salt to enhance it!). My father wanted that name after my mother, though my mother said she hated that name and went by her chosen American name of Angela for most of her adult life. She did, however end up Mui to her family at the end of her life.
Katherine was supposed to honor my dad's grandmother, Katy McCormick. Supposedly, he asked his mother (Katy's daughter) if it was Katy or Katherine and was told Katherine, but when I was handed over to my gr-grandma, he told her my name and she shoved me back saying, "I was born Katy Baggins and have been Katy McCormick since I got married. Not Katherine!"
Well, that was classy! Poor dad.
I've stuck with Katherine for almost all of my life and finally dropped the Mui completely from my name.

Kaleb Michael was named after his dad, Rachel Marie after my sister, and Kara Ruth after my mom :D
Ross was what my mum wanted to call me if I was a boy and I loved it. Elliot was a name my sister wanted to use but never got round to it.
Elliots middle name is Joshua David-Joshua after my nephew and David after my mums now ex partner.
Jacks middle name is Robert Darren- Robert is a family middle name on James side. His brother wanted a Robert but he can not have children so he asked us if we would consider using it as a MN. Darren is my brothers name.
Jasmine- I have always really liked her name and Tom loves it because he is a botanist and wanted a flower/plant type of name. Her MN is Jade after my younger sister.

My mom got Kristi from one of the students she had when she was interning for her degree in Elementary Education. Lynn Is after my dad's sister Linda.
Tim's middle name Grey Wallace is his grandpa's first and middle name.
Dylan has Tim's middle name
No story for Caleb's name we just liked Caleb Izaac
Isabella we chose because she was born in Italy and it is Italian and her middle name Melinda is after my sister who passed away before Caleb was born.
We didn't use anyone elses first names for our two kids. But we did give them are middle names. My name is Tracy Lee and my daughter's name is Angela Lee. My DH is Jason Isaac and my son is Jacob Isaac. We didn't really plan it but it seemed to fit the names we had so we did it for both of them. On my middle name is was cool because besides being my middle name it was also my DH grandfathers first name.

Megan Angelina was called Megan because it was the only name we agreed upon and Angelina because we saw a commercial for Tomb Raider LOL
Cristian Marcelo~ I LOVED the name Cristian and Steve said he didn't want it because it was his oldest brothers middle name and he didn't want to leave his other brother out so then we picked marcelo for his other brother.
My middle name is my moms name.
Steve is really Esteban Andres and isn't named after anyone although he does have a cousin called Andres Esteban (NOT kidding LOL)

Our family is big on family names. I really like the traditions we have.
For as long back as anyone can remember, the first-born son of the first-born son on my Dad's side have been named: Anthony James or James Anthony. My Grandfather is Anthony James (Papa Tony), my Dad is James Anthony and so my brother is Anthony James. We even have documents going back to that tradition with the ancestors' names in Italian: Girolamo Antonio and Antonio Girolamo. My maiden name we believe was given to my Great Grandfather when he came to Ellis Island. There is a town in Sicily called Randazzo and that's where we think our last name came from.
My sister is Joanne Marie. And I am Brooke Marie. Any daughter I would have had would have the middle name Marie.
My brother's are Anthony James and Thomas James. My boys are Alexander James and Kyle James. I knew we'd use James as middle name for any boy I have in respect to my family names. I took my husband's last name so I was determined to have the traditional middle names.
Alexander is actually my dh's middle name. My dh is Eric Alexander. The Alexander is his paternal grandma's maiden name.
Then Kyle, well, we both liked it. LOL
Since my Mom and Dad we only having two kids, I was almost Antoniette to carry on the tradition. Thankfully, my Mom intervened. Though my Dad swears that my sister and I were named after ex-girlfriends. :rolleyes
Shasta

I'm Shasta Ann. Ann is after my birthmom, Tina Ann. My first name is a name she heard in a western movie.
My husband is Michael Travis, Travis is after his dad...Robert Travis.
Our sons are Taj Cayden, Gavin Isaiah and Jonah Ethan. None are named after anyone, just names we liked.
I was going to be either Joanna, Katherine or Elizabeth. Katherine was out because my mom's aunt of the same name committed suicide. My dad thought Elizabeth was too uppity and hence Joanna. I still don't know how Elizabeth was too snotty when every character named Joanna on TV that I have ever seen has been a snotty bitch.:dunno
Rai is actually Raicheal. Her spelling is due to my Irish heritage and her name came from my grandmother's middle name.
Mira is named after our paternal grandmothers-who were spitfires. My grandma was Myra but pronounced Meera. We changed the spelling to try to avoid that confusion. Her middle name is Arpine pronounced ARE-pee-nay. It is Armenian for Phoebe and was Dave's grandmother's name.
Laura is..well inspired by Laura Ingalls Wilder and has my middle name which was my mom's middle name and was my grandma's maiden name.
My favorite story though is my mom's name. Her uncle Norman died long before she was born due to complications from polio. He was the youngest and my grandfather was the oldest. They had an incredible bond. Norman is the reason my grandfather met my grandmother. When my mom was born she was named Norma because of all the connections that ultimately brought her into this world.
Oh and I can't believe I forgot about Dave! His last name means family of many Davids in Armenian. So it makes sense that he is named David. Every man in the family has carried the name David somewhere in their name out of tradition for many generations.

Dave's dad is the oldest brother out of three. He named Dave after his brothers David and Michael. Dave wanted to continue the tradition and planned on naming our first son Jonathan Jamey. Sooo glad we didn't have to use that name!
I was named Christine just because it was a name that my mom and dad agreed on. My middle name, Ruth, is after favorite aunts on both sides.
Morgan Diane is my mom's maiden name backwards.
Kailyn Doris is named after three important women. Dave's birth mom (who died when he was 12) was named Debra Kaye. His stepmom (and my MIL) is Daphne Lynn. Doris is the first name of THE most important person in his early life, his Gram.
By the time we got to the third daughter, there were only two names that Dave liked - Nicole and Danielle. We named our third daughter Nicole and our fourth daughter became Danielle. Nicole has the middle name Noel because she was born on Christmas Day. Danielle's middle name is Paige, which means small child, since she's our baby. ;)

My name is Christine Gaye, named after Christ and named Gaye cause when I was born it meant happy! Chris is named Christopher Paul. His middle name is his father's first name. Isaac is Isaac Christopher, so he also has his father's first name as a middle name (Isaac just because we liked it.) Adam is Adam Copeland because he was likely to be the last grandchild, and since my dad had no sons, I wanted someone to carry on MY family name.
If Isaac had been a girl, he would have been Chloe Alta or Emma Alta after both of our grandmothers. If Adam had been a girl, he would have been Marianna Rose after my mom (Mary).
My nieces and nephews all have neat family name traditions, and since I have a captive audience, now you have to hear about them!! LOL
Kellie Sue (my step-niece) is named after her mom, Susan. Hannah Kate: Hannah is a family name on my mom's side, Kate is a family name on her dad's side. David Keener: David is his dad's first name and Keener was the middle name of a beloved coach of Scott's (my bil). And in an interesting twist, HIS family got Keener from a United Methodist minister they loved! (My dad is also a United Methodist minister!)
Next family! hee hee
Robert Ked named after my dad (Robert Mack) and my bil's dad who died when he was 12, Ked. Logan Mack: Logan was a family name in bil's family, and Mack after my dad's middle name and bil's favorite uncle.
Maria Christine: Maria after both their mothers (Mary Sue and Mary Lynne) and Christine after me;) and after Christ. Wesley Dale: after John Wesley (the founder of Methodism) and Dale after my bil.
And last!!
Leigh Ann Olivia: after 3 of their grandmothers and Ian Neal: Ian for his father's Scottish heritage and Neal after his middle name (Jeffrey Neal).

I am the only one of my dads 5 children to NOT have a Hungarian name. I was nearly called Iboya though (thank goddot they decided not to go with that one). Basically, my mum heard Erika a few weeks before I was born and liked it and it was one of the few names that my parents could agree on. My middle name is Elizabeth and is for my mum who is also called Elizabeth.
James is named for his maternal grandfather. James' older brother, however, is named John after his dad, his granddad and all that came before. John's son is also called John.
Sasha is actually named Alexandra Molly. James would not agree on any girls name. We both liked Alexander and it was a name my mother would have given another child. Then one day I thought, well we both like Alexander, what about Alexandra? And FINALLY, a name was agreed on LOL Our lovely Kristen reminded us of the Sasha nickname for Alexandra. I didn't want Alex or Lexi or Alexis and knew her name would be shortened so we went with Sasha.
Her middle name, molly, is for my maternal grandmother who was Molly. I love it and told James that he doesn't have a say in this. But he was happy for that. As it turns out, Molly is a version of Mary and my paternal grandmother is Maria (a version of Mary) and James maternal grandmother is also a Mary. So all but 1 grandmother is featured. Our next girl can have the mn of Alice after James' paternal grandmother ;)

. There is a town in Sicily called Randazzo and that's where we think our last name came from.
I have been there. :) it is near Mt. Etna (the Volcano) and not to far from where we lived there.
I have to say my mil's reasoning for naming David as she did makes me smile- fil failed to show up when she was in labour and he wanted to name him wayne, so when his didn't show mil came aroung from her emergency c-section all alone and decided screw fil she was naming him herself so named him David and refused to back down :lmao - she did compromise and allow anthony as a mn (fils name- he then went on to give his son from his 2nd marriage that as a mn and David as a little boy was very put out by this)
I'm Rebecca Amy for my grandad (he was a James and mom wanted Jamie so they compromised on Amy Rebecca but my sister was age 3 and told everyone Rebecca Amy so rather than correct everyone constantly my mom just registered me that.
DD1 is Chase-Elizabeth for my gran who was Elizabeth May (Betty) Chase came from reading too many comics :rolleyes
DS1 is Jude for St Jude Thaddeus, patron saint of lost causes and hope in desperate times (he took 4 years to conceive and was conceived after they told us to give up and find an egg donor) zidane- his mn is from final fantasy 9 and chosen by chase
dd2- dylan-marie... marie after the aristocats kitten and rogue from x-men, dylan was because davids grandad was desperate for someone to use a welsh name
ds2- Loki for 3 reasons- my love of view askew works, dh's love of mythology and for marvel comics :giggle ... his mn auron is from final fantasy x so jude's sequel (if he'd have been a girl he'd have been evan for davids grandad)
when we learnt loki was a boy we did ask my dad as he was last grandson (unless my sister eventually has any) so did he want either of his names and his response was "bloody hell no, it was bad enough to grow up with myself without landing another poor sod with it" :lmao

I was named Wendy after my parents told her family they were going to name me Jacqueline and my extended family, who speaks spanish, said oh, joaquina, and wouldn't back down. So they picked the first name they could think of that couldn't be translated.
Michael's name was chosen by dh. I actually hate it with a PASSION (too common for me) however dh was insisting and wouldn't back down. He had chosen the name in high school! Thomas is a family name (his brother, the oldest, is a Thomas, and cannot have any biological children. Dh wanted to pass the name down).
Danae was from a book that we both read and loved. It was a goddess in that series. Her middle name was supposed to be Marisol or something like that but when she was born, it didn't fit. My father's mn is Albert and my fil's name is Allen so we decided on Alexandra although I now wish we had gone with Alejandra since that is what we call her when we're upset with her.
Mick's real name isn't Mick. But that's what he has gone by since college and how I met him.

I am supposedly named after my mom's cousin?! but I never knew she even knew she had a cousin ... one of the many mysteries with her.
Eric is named after Eric Clapton and his middle name (Russell) is for a famous surfer. LOL
Kimberly is my best friend's middle name.
Caleb's middle name, Dominic, is Eric's brother's, dad's and grandpa's name.
Micayla's middle name, Jean, was my grandma's name.
Zechariah's middle name, David, is my dad's name.

Erika! Oh my Goddess! Another Hungarian! My last name means priest in Hungarian! My dad is Janos aka John and is 100% Hungarian. (I'm always surprised to meet other Hungarians-everyone you tell either thinks you're Bela Lugosi or Zsa Zsa Gabor!) Anyhoo, I'm Polly. Not a nickname. It's because my parents couldn't agree on anything else. My mom's choices were Ameranthra (Eewww!-suggested by her labor and delivery nurse) and Ilona. (Hey-it was the 70s) My dad wanted either Jane or Elizabeth (after his mom). My mom didn't think they could name after one grandmother without offending the other one, so no Elizabeth for my name choice. After 6 days with no name they settled on Polly. Polly Alexandra-my mom named my after the last Czarina of Russia.
My husband is CJ-Christopher James. Why CJ? His older brother started calling him CJ because he felt Christopher was too long-I'm not sure I believe this story. His brother was two and a half was CJ was born.
Our daughter is named after my paternal grandma. She was killed in car accident in 1995. Elizabeth Kondor. (It's not snotty!) Kidding Jo. Although, I'd like to point out the most famous Jo in literture is Jo March from Little Women. She totally rocked! Or empowered women, whichever you prefer.
Thus endeth the lesson,
Polly
Dh is a "II" -- he's named after his paternal grandfather. It was a tradition in their family to name the first grandson after his paternal grandfather. That was fine for their family but not for me so we did not follow the tradition with our son!
My mom's name is also Mary but we have different middle names. Mine is Mary Elizabeth and they called me Mary Beth as a kid to differentiate.
Madalyn's middle name is also Elizabeth -- this was NOT my idea since I had no desire to appear to be naming my own kid after myself but dh came up with it and since I had my way with her first name I thought I'd let him pick the middle.
John-Zachary Harrison is named after John Lennon and George Harrison. :) Dh, who is a history and politics buff, also liked that all three of his names were names of US presidents.

Mary, Zachary is the name of Ringo's eldest. Was that intentional?
Anyway, I'm Clare Elizabeth and the little chick is Charlotte Mary. I was named for the Gilbert O'Sullivan single and my middle name in deference to the Queen of England. In fact, my brother and sister have "royal" middle names too - Alex John and Megan Victoria.
Charlotte's middle name is after my Mum, it was always going to be Mary, no matter what I called her (originally she was going to be Stella, but that coupled with her father's surname sounded like a porn star).
