View Full Version : Did you know that I'm a "real" knitter?

When I went to the yarn store today to ask about a pattern I'm having trouble with, I ended up buying a hank of really pretty lace-weight yarn and having this conversation with the yarn store lady.
YSL: Do you want me to wind this?
Me: No thanks.
YSL: Are you sure?
Me: Yeah, I'm sure.
YSL: Why not?
Me: Because I have a swift and ball winder at home.
YSL: Oh! You are a real knitter then.
I didn't know there was a question about the authenticity of my knitting. I know she was trying to be complimentary, but I wasn't sure what to say to this. But she was really nice and at least she offered.
:rofl That's why I have yet to set foot in a yarn store. That, and the fear of children with sticky hands rubbing lollipop all over the yarn and causing general chaos.

:rofl What does it mean if you use a chair and a toilet paper roll to wind a center pull ball?

Christine, it means you have mad, think-outside-the-box skillz. ;)
Tomorrow they have a clinic where you can go and get help on your projects. I still haven't resolved this lace problem I'm having, and they said there's a woman who teaches lace knitting that comes to the clinics, so I'm going to go. I wonder if my "real" knitter status will be revoked since I'm still stumped. LOL

Drat! I'm so sorry, Sabrina - I completely forgot to look over your charts again. I thought I'd figured it out, but I wanted to try it and see if I was right, and I haven't gotten to it (and I just had the good eggnog, so I don't want to try now, lest I screw things up thanks to a very slight buzz).
For the record, I prowl the streets looking for knitters without ball winders to intimidate. ;) :D

I took the project and the book to the clinic today and two ladies looked it over and they both agreed that it wouldn't work the way it's written. So they helped me figure out the best way to alter it so it wouldn't screw upthe pattern too much.

Oh, that's good! I'm glad you've got it figured out. It's a shame there wasn't errata. I had the same thing happen with the bolero I made for Nora, though - I found a very obvious mistake, but couldn't find a reference to it online. Not as popular a pattern, but still. It's frustrating to have those kinds of mistakes in a $20 or $30 book.

Yeah, and the people that responded to me on Ravelry seemed to be pretty insistent that it HAD to be my mistake. So I figured they must have been right. Especially if people who had knit the pattern were saying there were no mistakes.
