So, the chapel isn't a particular denomination or anything? If it's associated with a particular denomination, like one that does believe the cross has significance, then I think they should be allowed to keep it up.
I have a friend who is a very liberal, very devout Catholic and a W&M alum, and I'd love to know what she thinks about this.
Nichol ordered the cross removed in October to make the chapel more welcoming to students of all faiths. Previously, the cross could be removed by request; now it can be returned by request.
That seems pretty reasonable to me. If a group wants the cross, they can have it up, so it's not like it won't be up for Christian services. Other groups must also have to arrange to have their religious symbols put up if they want to use the chapel for services, so to me it seems like treating Christian groups the same as any other group. Since the chapel is for general student use and not tied to a particular denomination, it doesn't seem like something that needs to generate much controversy, since it's not like anyone is banned from having the cross in the chapel when and if it's wanted.

I suppose it makes sense if it is nondemoninational and used for many faiths.
