View Full Version : Blocking advice?
I finished knitting Kristen's Lazy Susan scarf and now I need to block it. However, having never blocked anything before I'm nervous. The yarn I used was a nylon/acrylic blend. I was planning to pin it, spritz it, and let it dry (after reading an article on knitty). Does that sound reasonable?
Also, I can't decide [I]where[I] to do the blocking. I'm not crazy about using my bed because of the pins. It probably wouldn't hurt the bed, but it sounds sketchy in my head. It's way too long for my ironing board, can you block in sections? I would think it would come out uneven in the end. Would it work to lay several towels down in layers and pin it to those? Or does it need more of a stable surface?
Any other advice you can pass along would be greatly appreciated!
I abandoned plan A, and then tried pinning it to the ironing board but it was still not straight. Then I tried the acrylic ruler I got at JoAnn's sale today (they extended the doorbusters through the whole day) and it seems to be working very well- BUT (it's a big but) it isn't dry yet so I will have to wait it out.
I am bumping this up so our knitters will see it. I wish I could help you but I am about as good at holding knitting needles as I am at holding chopsticks.LOL
I hope plan B works for you!

Good luck with it. I've never knit anything that needs blocking, but I'm going to soon.

Sorry, I've been out of town! The yarn I used was cotton, and I wet blocked it. If you look at Eunny Jang's old blog, she has a great tutorial on lace blocking. It's meant for real lace, not the thicker stuff I did, but it works similarly. I washed my scarf in warm water and gentle soap and rinsed it out. Then I rolled it in a clean towel and stomped on it until as much of the water was squeezed out as possible. Then I laid it out on a second, dry clean towel, and pinned it to the shape and length I wanted. Then I let it dry. That's about it! I hope that's helpful.
Thanks Kristen. I'm not entirely happy with the way it came out with just spritzing, but I can always try again. The size and shape came out great, but the edging is still folding under and it feels very stiff. I'm a little sick of looking at it so I think I'll put it aside until I'm sick of the next Christmas gift in the works, and then I'll try again with it. Since the spritzing didn't ruin it I won't be afraid to do a little more with it. Maybe toss it in the dryer on the fluff cycle to see what happens.
