So, yes, it's 5:55 AM my time, and I've been up since 4, because I can't sleep. As productive as it's making me, I want to sleep, darn it. I had a day earlier this week where I slept not a wink, and even the herbal over-the-counter sleep aid Daniel bought me seems to help only a small amount.

Any other insomniacs? How do you handle it?

Oh my! You poor thing.

I don't often have trouble going to sleep in the first place, but sometimes if the kids wake me up in the last half of the night, I have a lot of trouble going back to sleep(like say, if Zoe wakes up crying at 4:00 and I have to get up at 6:45, I'll sometimes not manage to go to sleep). I hate it when that happens!

yes the army provides me potent sleep medicinebecause I don't sleep more than 2-3 hours a night. They say I am sufferingfrom combat isomnia.
If it is a regular problemplease go get it checked out because the over the counter sleep aids can be veryhabit forming.

I have a hard time sleeping most night and am up til sometimes 3 or later. But it isn't every night. Sorry you had such a long night.

Like Kristen, I can fall asleep easily but then get woken up and not get back to sleep! It's very frustrating and exhausting when that happens!

I used to go through cycles and have to take something to sleep every few months. Lately though, it is rare that I get a good night's sleep--and I consider that where I'm only awake one or two times a night. This week, it has been considerably more times a night! It absolutely stinks! I think I'm gonna take my meds tonight in hopes of a good nights' sleep!

I used to have the most horrible sleep issues. Well... I guess I still do, probably. I have no problem falling asleep, but 5 hours later or so, I am WIDE awake. Very frustrating at 3am :rolleyes

I have no great advice. Nothing, absolutely nothing worked for me. I started taking a drug called Trazadone before bedtime about a year ago, and I never wake up in the middle of the night any longer. It's not a "sleep aid", but it surely does help to keep me asleep.

I'm so sorry Kristen, I just hate hate hate the feeling of not being able to get the sleep that I need :squeeze

I have insomnia. There are nights where either I have a horrible time getting to sleep or I can fall right asleep but wake up numerous times throughout the night.

Honestly, I take Ambien. Not every night, but a lot of nights. It's non-addicting and I take it as needed. It's been a godsend for me the last two years. I'm actually rested.

I have been getting around 4 hours sleep tops a night for the last 6 mths. I take naps when I can and just lay there listening to my Ipod. I refuse to take medication for it at this point.

Is the supplement Melatonin? If no, try it, it does help trmendously.

That's the one.

I'm starting to wonder if the current bout is health related, though. I've come down with something rather flu-like, but hopefully short lived. Yuck!

I hope you feel better.

I also have a jar of "shine", maybe that would help?

I get periodic bouts of wicked insomnia. It really is awful :(.

I get it too but it is a known trait of ADHD. Once my brain can think, it has a hard time stopping.

I used to take melatonin and that really helped. I haven't taken it in a long time due to being pg, nursing, pg, nursing, pg/nursing and now just nursing.

I hope you feel better soon. My girls just went through a NASTY cold. Rai is still dealing with it, Laura is still clearing out after 10 days and of course, Mira steam rolled through it. But it is definitely a hard one if that is what you have.:hugs

I'm not sure if I have insomnia, but that's me too!! :( It sucks!! I don't do anything to help it so I don't have any advice.

It's quite normal for me to still be tossing and turning at 5am...which is not to say I like it like that.

As far as feeling rested, I figure that as long as laying relatively still and not fighting with myself about being awake I can function the next day.

It's 4:35 am here and I'm awake because I haven't actually been to sleep yet. I have always had trouble sleeping. It's falling asleep that seems to be my problem. I tend to just lay there thinking about things. I tried melatonin and it helped me fall asleep but I would keep waking up. I've tried cutting out caffeine. I'm down to about one caffeinated soda a week but even that hasn't helped any.

Yup, me too, except that my caffeine comes from the occasional green tea. The thinking about things seems to be my problem, too.

I fell asleep OK last night at midnight or so, but I got up at 6:30. That would be enough sleep except that I haven't gotten enough sleep all week and I would have liked to have slept in just a little.

I used to put on The Phantom Menace when I couldn't sleep and I'd be off in five minutes. It's a desperate measure, but maybe I need to try it again.

:rofl That is one I haven't tried yet! Thanks for the suggestion! I've done old episodes of The Beverly Hillbillies and it works pretty well!

Both my sons take melatonin to get to sleep and it helps them out tremendously, therefore helping ME out tremendously! I, unfortunately, can't take it because of counterindications with my other meds.

Have you tried Benadryl? In another thread a while back, I posted that I use it for when I might have an anxiety attack. My doctor recommended it because it's sedating.

And, in your case, it might help with the cold, too.

However, if it is something outside of normal insomia, caused by PMS, cold, etc. try the melatonin. The next step is contacting your doc for a prescription.

Good luck!!

Polly

I used to turn on The Wizard of Oz and I'd be asleep by the time she met the Scarecrow. :giggle

OT, but Polly THANKS for that tip on the Benadryl in case of an anxiety attack...I used that recently and it really did help out!!
