Okay, please don't yell at me or lecture me. I am going to admit something that I did that is probably not recommended but I honestly feel as though I was out of options.
So Eliza has a stuffy/snotty nose....again. This is the third time in her life she's had one. The previous times it caused her a lot of trouble sleeping but all I had to do was put in some saline drops and then suction her and it would clear her up and she'd be good for a couple hours.
Well, this time, the saline/suction isn't working. I am having a hard time getting anything out when I suction. When I do get her cleared out enough to breathe it only lasts 20 or 30 minutes and then she's stuffed up again. I have also tried the Little Noses baby decongestant drops, given her baby Tylenol with decongestant, elevated the head of her mattress, and am running the vaporizer with liquid Vicks in it. NONE of this is helping. She was still stopped up tight, awake and miserable. Oh, I should also add that she was having problems with this last night and was up every 20-45 minutes allll night long, and then only took a couple 30-minute naps today because, again, her nose stopped up and woke her up. So she was exhausted and obviously very unhappy.
Anyway, what I ended up doing was using some of my Vicks Sinex nasal spray on her. I only used a couple drops and only put it in one nostril. And guess what? Within a minute she was breathing easily and is now sound asleep in her crib. It's supposedly 12-hour spray so I'm hoping that fixes her up till morning.
So that's not too bad, is it? I know it doesn't say to use it on babies but I just felt I had no other options. She was absolutely wiped out but could not stay asleep. She kept flailing and startling like she was suffocating. :( I tried all the "baby approved" methods that usually work for us but for some reason they weren't doing a darned thing. I know it's not ideal but the poor thing was desperate for some relief. She was also getting very distressed every time I tried to suction her.
By the way, can anyone think of anything further I could do to maybe help? Obviously I want to avoid using that on her again if at all possible but I really think I covered all the stuff people usually suggest to try. If anyone has any other ideas, do let me know.
