She's still sticking to it. I told my husband about it. He laughed and said the minute someone sticks a big juicy t-bone in front of her she'll crack. I'm not sure how long she'll last, but I think it might last a while this time. She's tried it before, because she thought it was wrong, but this was when she was a lot younger (before she was on the internet and watched PETA videos).

The reason I don't know if it'll be a permanent thing is because I've seen the way she eats steaks. She eats them VERY rare. Sometimes when we'd drive by a field with cows in it we'd tease her by asking if she wanted us to stop so she could tackle a cow and start gnawing on it. LOL

But even if this doesn't stick, I still think it's a good thing. She's learning about nutrition and developing healthier habits. We've even started taking 30-45 minute walks together after dinner.

Well after 6 days of no meat, she finally caved and ate some turkey. I still haven't had any meat even though I never intended to be a vegetarian. I do think we'll stick to eating healthier though. I figure meat 2-3 times a week should be sufficient.

Good for her! She's still very young, and that's a tremendous amount of will-power to have at that age!! WTG!

That's impressive that she's even trying. Maybe she would feel okay about having some free-range chicken? That's a sort of a compromise. Kudos to Krysten. I wish I could be veggie but I'm too much of a selfish wuss to try it.

She lasted longer than I did at that age.

Awesome! Healthy eating is a great family activity. I can't believe she went is long as she did!

She and Dave are the same way about their steaks. I think he would be in that field right along side her gnawing on that cow.LOL

That is wonderful, the change in diet alone is a great thing and it might be a start to her eventually taking on full time vegetarianism - at her age I was vegan for over a year (wouldn't even wear animal products... my mother went into dispair but i was thoroughly dedicated)

That's great. When I was 12, I became a vegetarian and stayed that way until I was 19 or 20. My mom didn't think it would last that long, either.

Good for you guys!

We actually started out trying one meatless week to get into the habit of eating less meat, and we liked it so much that now I plan meatless meals. But, we both eat meat when we eat out. Neither one of us has a moral problem with eating meat; we just feel like it's better for our health and for the health of the planet to eat meat infrequently. 2-3 meals of meat a week sounds like a nice balance.

I have been a vegetairan for about 2 years now and it was the best thing I ever did. I was diagnosed with IBS about 3 years ago. I was speaking to one of my best friends who is also a vegetarian. She told me she was diagnosed with IBS as well and when she stopped eating meat it went away, so I tried it. I have been IBS free for 2 years. In the beginning I craved meat but after awhile the craving went away. I did also drop about 20 pounds in the beginning too, which was a bonus as well.

How long did it take for your IBS symptoms to go away? I have it too and it's awful. I have noticed that when I'm drinking LOTS of water and eating regular, healthy meals, it's nowhere near as bad.

I still haven't had any meat. It's day 8 for me. Now I'm just interested in seeing how long I can go without it.

It didn't take to long. I think it was about 2-3 weeks.

What causes the biggest issues is when you eat food with a higher fat content like red meat and pork. Those meats and simmilar foods sit for so long in your stomach fermenting before they digest, this is very hard on your digestive tract. As an example Pork will actually sit for 6 hours before digesting. You might also try to eat some dried fruit, this will help naturally help things move :D naturally.....thou you need to be sure you get the kinda that is not coated with anything. Most health food stores will have a dried fruit section with organically dried fruits......my fav is the apricots.

Sorry I have been studying to be a holistic nutritionist so I jump on the soap box sometimes.

No, feel free to share all the info you can with me. I'm not big on taking medicine, so anything that helps me deal with things without it is something I'm interested in.

I am so excited to see this thread. I just requested the vegetarian recipes from PETA. Brooke's friend's friend, Eva, was my college roommate and vegetarian. I am not a veggie, but I like healthy eating, so I am trying to do more meatless meals, too! I think that's a great idea.

Good for Krysten for doing so well and good for you too! We eat a couple of "meatless meals" here every week as well.

My experience with the medications they use to treat IBS only made things worse. The doctor insisted that the medication was the only thing that I could do to deal with the IBS and so I fired him.

Yeah, they prescribed Bentyl but that didn't seem to do a damn thing for me so I stopped taking it.

Still haven't had any meat. We went to lunch and I had pasta and a salad, but I can guarantee the streak will end tomorrow. I have a knitting meetup at Panera Bread (which I haven't been to in almost a year) and I am totally hooked on their Smokehouse Turkey Panini's.
