View Full Version : Inspiration
I just came across what is by far the funniest thing any of my students wrote this current batch of papers. (Note: the assignment was NOT to define inspiration. I'd never give that assignment because I'd be afraid I'd get a lot of answers like this.)
"What is an inspiration? To me an inspiration is somebody or something that inspires somebody. For me my inspiration wasn't just someone it was some people and some things."
Yes, it has been a looooooooooong night.

Lori, it sounds like you might need that martini in your avatar. ;)
I'm currently taking an online course in order to fit my schedule, and every day is a reminder that people are mostly illiterate and don't always take classes to learn. I'm ripping my hair out as a student. I can't imagine what it must be like as a teacher!
I get a lot of really badly-written papers, and I'm okay with that now, as long as the writer is actually saying something. What really gets me is when people have lots and lots of words that don't have any actual content, as if the words are just there for decoration.
Thanks for the martini, Kristen. ;)

The words without content is what is making want to slit my wrists. The class is an Introduction to African American Studies, and the issues at stake are large, contentious, and serious. And then you see gobbledy gook with no thought behind it, and it's almost painful. I'm worried about quoting from an online course online on a public forum - obviously these folks have internet access and some ability to use the web - but there have been some doozies. I'll try to sum some of them up.
Oh goodness, she actually goes back to the same idea at the end. The paper ends with
"So what is an inspiration for me? It's the people and things that inspire someone in one way or another."
Inspiration is inspiring.
In all fairness, it's actually a fairly well-written paper and there is real content. It just has a really, really bad intro and conclusion. Actually, this is one I may need to photocopy for future classes, to show how a poor intro and conclusion can ruin an otherwise-perfectly-adequate paper.
Wow! I am feeling inspired!LOL

What is sucky writing? Sucky writing is writing that is sucky... but not just because it is solely written, but that it is written suckily as well...
