This is actually pretty normal here- one of the mothers at DD1's school had 2 of her sons signed by different premiership teams (top league in British soccer) before they were teenagers, one of them left home to live in and train before he even reached high school age which i found really sad but she sees it as doing it to give him the best shot at a career. I recall last year having to more or less pick her up off the ground when her one son decided the day he was set to sign a professional contract that he didn't want it anymore, she walked her youngest daughter to school and was literally speechless verging on tears in the school yard. she was really really knocked for six when he changed his mind and said it was his parents dream not his and he just wants to be a kid, it was really eye opening to how much life energy some people pour into football i can tell you.
Beckham was signed when he was a very young boy too- if you look on youtube you'll probably find footage of him as a small child.
