Gay Groups Call Commercial Featuring Men Accidentally Kissing Homophobic
(AP) A commercial for Snickers candy bars launched in the Super Bowl broadcast was benched after its maker got complaints that it was homophobic.
The ad showed two auto mechanics accidentally kissing while eating the same candy bar and then ripping out some chest hair to do something “manly.” One of the alternate endings on the Snickers Web site showed the men attacking each other.

I kind of liked that commercial :giggle I could see how the attacking each other might not be so good. But I liked the chest hair ending. I do not see why they pulled it. :dunno I did not really think it was homophobic .

Ok, I haven't see the ad but heard what was in it. I shall hazard a guess that the offence caused was by the assumption that you can't be "manly" if you are gay. There seems to be a prejudice and view that gay men are all "girlie, limp-wristed and camp". (Not my words but the words I hear most to describe a gay man). That is patently not true anymore than all women are blonde, simpering and air-heads!
From reading the article, there was also shots of reactions from the super bowl teams to the ad. As the article stated:
The Web site also featured video of players from the Super Bowl teams reacting to the kiss.
“This type of jeering from professional sports figures at the sight of two men kissing fuels the kind of anti-gay bullying that haunts countless gay and lesbian school children on playgrounds all across the country,” Human Rights Campaign president Joe Solmonese said in a statement.
GLAAD spokesman Marc McCarthy said Tuesday the group believed “this kind of prejudice was inexcusable.”
Any jeering to gay behaviour that is broadcasted should be removed. This just creates and legitimises the bullying the gay teens and adults have to endure throughout the lives. We should be helping to legitimise and normalise homosexuality, not creating a hostile environment for it. And even seemingly humourous ads like this one (again I haven't seen it and am just going by the description of it) just cements the view that there is something wrong with gay people and gay behaviour.
I liked this commercial, but I can kinda see why others may not. My kids were kinda in shock at it, but they laughed. Dylan was grossed out and couldn't believe that 2 guys would kiss, but that is a 9 year old for ya! ;)

I thought it was stupid, but didn't see where anyone could take offense to it. I slso thought it was more insulting to auto mechanics than to gay men, but since I'm a hetero woman what the hell do I know? LOL
