This is the second day Thomas' school (and basically all of the schools in the area) have been closed because of the cold. I have to say, I don't really get it. We've heard it has something to do with how difficult it is to get the busses up and running, but there are places where it's this cold all the time, and I'm assuming their busses run just fine, so I don't really understand why that's a major enough issue to cause every school in the metro Detroit area to be closed for two days. Then I was thinking maybe it would be too expensive to keep the schools comfortably heated, but again schools in really cold areas must also deal with that, and that maybe it was unsafe for kids to walk in the cold, but again that's not anything school in Alaska don't deal with.

Anyone know why extremely cold weather would be a reason to shut down schools? (The roads are fine, so that's not it, either.)

Alot of the kids that attend Milwaukee Public Schools either walk to school or wait outside for the bus. I think that is the reason schools are closing down here.

This is the 2nd day MPS is closed and that is very very rare for our schools to close. We could have blizzards here and school is still open. But now that the weather is -20 here i think they just want to keep the kids safe.

ours are closed again too. Can't think of any other reason other than buses. But the town I grew up in doesn't have busing right now so I'm thinking it was too cold for kids to walk to school with the wind chill soooo low

No, schools are not closed here, I guess people are just used to cold here in Finland LOL It's -20, so I think it's around 4 degrees here now.

That's what I was thinking about. It's definitely cold here, but it's 11 degrees, which I think is horrible, but it's a lot colder than that a lot of other places.

I'm just bitter because days off for the cold stink! It's not like a snow day where we can play outside, because it's so cold. So, we're just stuck in the house.

The only time the cold closes school here is when the pipes burst or the heater dies.

It looks like everyone here is back to school tomorrow. At least, I hope so! Sean teaches after work tonight and isn't home until 8 pm, so this has shaped up to be a very, very long day.

Thomas is so cute because he keeps telling me Ms. Pat (his favorite teacher) is "so sad" that there's no school. I haven't crushed his delusion and told him that I bet Ms. Pat is really, really happy to have gotten an extra two days off from his class of little crazy people. :giggle

My kids haven't been to school since last Thursday! They are really enjoying this. There is supposed to be some snow tonight so they might be out tomorrow too!

Oh definitely! I can't stand it! I thought I will freeze in few seconds while getting out of the car and getting inside the house! LOL And we don't even have snow! So yeah, we stuck inside all day long! :footinmouth

It gets colder than -30 here and schools NEVER close. Even if we get 2 feet of snow. Edmontonians are tough people. LOL They do get indoor recess though.
