Anyone else a huge fan of film soundtracks - mainly original composed-for-film soundtracks?
It is one of my geeky music pleasures. I have so far spent the morning introducing Sasha to the joys of Ennio Morricone and Danny Elfman (two of my favourite film composers).
So what are your favourite film scores?

I adore the soundtrack to Last of the Mohicans. I used to fall asleep to that when I was a teen because the sounds were so gorgeous. The other ones that pop to mind are the Star Wars and Benny and Joon.
Our wedding song was taken from a soundtrack too. It's called "My One and Only Love" by Sting and it's on the Leaving Las Vegas soundtrack. Yes, our wedding song was from a movie about an alcoholic and an prostitute. :giggle
Las of the mohicans. LOTR and also 50 first dates.

The Sound of music, Sister Act, City of Angels, but just because I love those movies and the music!

How could I forget Moulin Rouge? Even though there's only one original song on the soundtrack (which is my favorite of the songs, btw), it's arranged in a very non-traditional way and I LOVE it. :D I'm also pretty fond of several musicals - Grease, West Side Story and Sound of Music to name a few.

I love the soundtrack to Rushmore, and I don't have them, but I like the songs from other Wes Anderson films, like The Life Aquatic. In terms of composed for the film I love the incidental music in Benny and Joon.

I love me some Bernard Herrmann or Nino Rota (who Danny Elfman "borrows" from quite a bit). Actually I like soundtrack music much more than I initially realized.
edited to agree: Wes Anderson films have amazing soundtracks. Not to be too much of a fanboy, but his picking the live version of "A Quick One" for the Rushmore soundtrack was sheer genius.

The bolded bit just made a line in a Magnetic Fields' song clear to me. I had only a vague idea of who Nino Rota was.
The line in question, from "Reno Dakota" was:
"Reno Dakota, I'm no Nino Rota; I don't know the score"
It all makes sense now.

Jejune, Nino Rota did many of the scores for Fellini's movies, as well as the Godfather movies, if that helps.

Ah. Then I've likely heard some of the scores. I've never seen the Godfather movies (shock! horror!) but I have watched a few Fellini films.
My favorites are Gladiator, American Beauty, and Magnolia. I could listen to the Gladiator soundtrack all day. It is so beautiful. I adore that movie.

Dana, I am with you on Magnolia, and sadly adding Madagascar. Is there a riddled with shame smilie?
I'm another Danny Elfman fan, and I was discussing Benny and Joon with Erika just the other night, so just as she now knows how much I love that score you also know that...and the fact that I have an excuse to jump around the living room to The Proclaimers is just another bonus.
I absolutely adore the soundtrack to Until The End Of The World...actually, all the soundtracks to Wim Wenders films are better than average now that I think about it.
I'm also finding that the Harry Potter scores are great to study to.
I also love whoever is choosing the music in the supermarket I normally go to, because I did appreciate being able to do my shopping to the Pulp Fiction soundtrack...well, minus the dialogue, but still.

Nino Rota is a fabulous composer. And I have started to appreciate Philip Glass a lot more. Though if I have to listen to Lux Aerturnum (from Requiem for a Dream) one more time I'll scream LOL (it was one of the most requested songs on our radio show last summer - plus one of the ad songs for the bloody Ryder Cup).
The Gladiator soundtrack is rather good, even if Hans Zimmer ripped of Holst (him of the Planets composer fame).
Christine - I do love how the used the original songs for the soundtrack to Moulin Rouge. Beautifully done!
O and how could I forget the beauty of the score for Hero? The haunting beauty of Itzhak Perlman's violin playing just gets me every time.

One of the bonuses of marrying Daniel was that he has several Wim Wenders soundtracks on CD. LOL I'm sorry I forgot those. Nick Cage, Johnny Cash, U2, Daniel Lanois...good stuff.
My brother tells me that Wim Wenders ate his hat at a press conference when Errol Flynn got a film made.
