Are there any books that you just have to read over and over? If so, what are they and what is it about them that causes you to read them so many times?

I'll need to get back to this later, but there are quite a few.

I've read Jane Eyre a bunch of times....it's just my most favorite novel ever. :giggle

I've read some non-fiction stuff several times too...mostly my books on being a good wife, because I seem to need a refresher every so often.

Anything by Mercedes Lackey. I'm a big fantasy fan and I love her books that deal with Valdemar. Also the Tolkein books and The lion, the whitch and the wardrobe series. I've read all of those many times.

The Hobbit and LOTR series - These are the books that started my love for reading. I get completely lost inside the story in a way that no other book has ever affected me.

The Clan of the Cave Bear series - I love the characters and storyline development in these books (at least the first three).

A Handmaid's Tale - I read this in college as part of a history course and have read it several times since. It's such an interesting story and picture of what could happen to our society. Beautifully written too.

This Present Darkness and Piercing the Darkness by Frank Peretti - I read these books from time to time to help me get a clear picture in my head of spiritual warfare.

That's all I can think of right now...

LOTR is a fabulous book. James has read it countless times at this stage and is looking forward to reading it to Sasha!

For me, I am a Jane Austen fan and Pride and Prejudice is one of my favourite books. So I read it over and over again, along with Emma, which is the book that introduced me to Austen. Her style and wit is wonderful, ahead of its time, and I love how it portrays the situation of women (especially) in that time.

I've tried to read Pride and Prejudice and it's just not happening for me right now. I think because I often have to read in short bursts and that book doesn't lend itself well to that.

Kristen, I really really wanted to read the book! I saw the movie and loved it, so I guess I will have to pick up the book now :) Which one did you read? I tried to search on Amazon, but there are quite a few versions of it and I don't know which one to choose! LOL

Now my favorite books are: Pope Joan, Not Without My Daughter and Thorn Birds I LOVED those books, don't have particular reason why, but I thought they were written really well and I just couldn't put the books down!

The books I read over and over are mostly ones that I find comforting. I've read Octavia's Butler's Xenogensis and Parables series books a few times, when I feel like humanity is just hopeless, because it reminds me that even in extremely odd circumstances (they're sci-fi books), there's still hope.

I browse through A People's History of the United States whenever I feel really down about the state of the world, because it reminds me that the things that really matter aren't the ones that are getting all the press.

Frederick Buechner's Listening to Your Life is a book with a year of selections from his writings, and I browse through it when I feel spiritually down, because he does such a good job of describing the way God works in our lives. Anne Lamott's Travelling Mercies is another book that has a lot of essays I find very spiritually comforting, and very funny.

There are more, but those are the ones I could think of right now.
