Legislators want teens to be able to vote in school elections
ST. PAUL (AP) - Students live by the rules set by school board members but have no say in their selections, a set-up that would change under a bill before Minnesota lawmakers.

How do you feel about this?

I think it's a great idea! It starts educating kids on politics and on the importance of voting.

:yup I'd like to see teens more involved in politics on the local level, generally. I can understand why people might be reluctant to have teens voting in state or national elections, but I think allowing them to vote in school board and other local elections would be a great way to get them involved. It is their education, and they should have a say about it. It would also force the school board members to actually have contact with the kids their decisions affect.

I agree Lori. I think it is a great idea to have them involved in things going on in their school like that. And it gets them interested in politics early on. :)

I disagree. I think the voting age is 18 for a reason, and those students who are old enough can vote anyway.

I actually agree with gr8mommy. They are under 18. 18 is the voting age so I will go with that arbitrary age. There are plenty of legislators that make rules about their lives from local to the federal level at that age and no one is encouraging the rules to change there. I don't see why the school board should be any different.

Besides-I run a benevolent dictatorship. Why would I want them to think they have a vote earlier than necessary!LOL j/k

I have to agree with gr8mommy on this one. Although I agree that teens should understand how our government works, they're not yet qualified to start trying to influence it. I'm sure that there are some teens who are smarter and better informed than many adults, but the line has to be drawn somewhere.
