View Full Version : Teething... i want, no i NEED...
your tips for surviving teething
Despite being THE most placid baby on earth Loks is teething and it's like i have a screeching banshee stalking me as everytime i stop rocking him he screams, i finally got him to sleep this morning and Jude decided to poke a finger in his ear and "tickle" him.... to say i came close to shaving him (jude) bald is an understatement.... mommy is on her final twig here and Jude is seriously driving me to distraction with Loki teething too
soooooooo i am doing the teething gel thing, i am hopping around, rocking, patting bums etc but i want more ideas.
Give me your teething survival tactics please!!!!!

Beka, can you get Teetha where you are? It is made by Nelsons and is a homeopathic teething remedy,. It comes in sachets of powder and is so soothing to them. We swear by it for Sasha. Also frozen teething rings. and feed, feed, feed.
:squeeze hope your little one is quicker at the old teething than my one. she still doesn't have teeth!
hmm- shall have a trek up town and see- they have boots and holland and barrett up there so one of them should stock it i guess! (if not i may well throw myself at the mercy of the herbal lady in H&B and get her to recommend something)
Chase used cold cucumber but as we're delaying solids with Loks i am hesitating on if it's a good idea or not :dunno i may have a look for an ice teether for him (although lazy little moo is not keen on holding anything but a handful of my hair LOL)

no don't use food items. and that rules out rusks and liga as well.
o yes, frozen washcloth also works. Sash loved the texture of it as she chewed on it.
the cloth might work well- he does have a habit of gnawing on any toys he edges near to so that could work, never could do with rusks - horrid things LOL (especially when ones niece cements them to ones table- not that i have issues LOL) and never heard of liga so we're safe there.
What about teething necklaces? I have been looking for a decent nursing necklace anyway (as i am going to lose a nipple soon the way he turns head to be nosey when feeding) to keep him occupied so maybe worth my seeing which of those double as teething beads? hmmm.
I can remember giving Jude an ice filled teether only to have him burst it (vicious little thing that he was) Dyl just didn't give a stuff when teething
We have stuff here called Hyland's Teething Tablets; they're probably the same as the stuff Erika has described. I've heard lots of good things about them though I never had to use them myself.
I wish I could be more help but both my kids, surprisingly, were easy teethers. (Which means this next one will probably be the devil incarnate. ;))
mary if the music plays when she's born you'll know LOL
Textured teething rings used to make Maia feel better, as did frozen wash cloths.
If you can get hold of some chamomile extract, that might work...if only to help him be more relaxed.
I also remember reading somewhere that marshmallow extract is supposed to be good for teething babies.
A good homeopathic pain and fever liquid can be helpful...and if he's really that uncomfortable a small (half or less than recommended) dose of paracetemol given when he appears most uncomfortable could help, just to take the edge off everything. I used to hate giving Maia anything, but there were times that it was obvious something had to be done, and she was always able to catch up on some sleep then, and was so much more comfortable.
well he is presently happy to nurse as soon as the teething gel kicks in so fingers crossed - shall definately invade holland and barrats with this info to see what they can offer

Tequila?
Ibuprofen was the one thing that worked best for us. I also used teething tablets and they helped sometimes.
I've heard that frozen bagels can be good teething rings.

I usually put an ice cube in a washclothe and tie it in with a rubber band or the like.
I use Hylands teething tabs, sounds like what Erika mentioned.
Motrin works really well with my kidlets.
and as a last resort, I will rub some brandy on their gums.. I'm not giving them a shot or anything, just dabbing my finger in the brandy and rubbing it on their gums. ;)
Last recommendation would have to be one of those silicon baby toothbrushes that you put on your fingertip...he can munch away on the little projections, and you get a little bit of protection from the tooth that's coming.
hmm- Kate i may well try that- they sell them at the grocery store.
Not keen on the brandy idea to be honest as we're not even drinkers ourselves so don't want to give him a taste for it LOL
David pointed out to me Chase was significantly older than loks is now when she had the cucumber (she was way past weaned- he does seem to be teething earlier than my other 3)
I have found if we're out walking he's happy as he's a nosey little so and so who is enjoying seeing the world so i am walking alot right now

Cold washcloths, frequent nursing and distraction are the things that work for R right now. She's cutting molars and is significantly more troubled by it than her brothers ever were. I also give her a small dose of paracetamol and/or Bonjela at night time, and most nights she ends up in bed with us.
I can sympathise, I really can.

My sympathies. My two-month old has several teeth coming in (he's been teething since five weeks.) Letting him chew on our fingers or a soothie pacifier seems to help him.
