My neighbour is not someone I like much. He is old-fashioned and quite frankly ignorant (of the old snobby colonial type of ignorance). He is basically an old fart.

Anyway, I met him at the local shop when I went to pick up milk and was being polite so made some small talk. He asked how Sasha was (though called her a "he" :rolleyes) and made the common joke about wondering when she would be building her first computer (since James is so well known for being a complete and utter computer techie genius nerd, Sasha has a lot of pressure on her...also from the music side.). I jokingly say that she hasn't quite reached that point yet but is getting to grips with my laptop.

He replies (with a little chuckle) "what?? she must be retarded then!"

WTF!!!! Why would you even joke about this. And to the childs mother? I was so stunned and didn't even retort and just walked away.

You;re telling me. I usually ignore him as I have an issue with him from the time of my teenage years (nothing bad - he is really just a pretentious old fart). But lately I was trying to be nice and polite. Yep - not happening again I can tell you.

O and about the computer pressure - the running joke amongst our friends, family and james' clients is that Sasha will be building computers (or hacking them depending on who you are talking to) while playing virtuoso violin by the time she is 5. It is to do with our respective backgrounds.

I would have just said something like "Well she has obviously already passed YOU in the IQ department" and walked away.

Like others have said do not feel bad about not retorting because i honestly can't think anyone would have been anticipating it enough to be on guard with a quick remark back.
