Have you had good, bad or ugly IEP experiences?

My experience with them is pretty limited but it does help me to see where Kailyn is (speech) so I know where she needs work and where we're progressing.

We're new to IEPs. Ian entered school in Jan, so that was our first experience with them. It went smoothly and Ian seems to already be showing some signs of progress.

We've been lucky, I think, but I still can't say they're fun. I know Liam got good services right up front and I like most of the people involved, but I still feel like our concerns are a little at odds.

My brother's helped him make it through school.

I see them as a necessary evil. I wish all teachers were able and willing to do whatever it takes to reach a child, and help the child reach their full potential, without a legal document which basically forces them to do so. I say that as a special education teacher, too, who was on the other side of the IEP table for 10 years.

Since I only see most of my students for 45 minutes a week, I kind of like the IEP. I know exactly what I need to do to help the child, since a lot of a child's difficulties may not be obvious. In a case where the parents are watching the teachers like a hawk, I am able to document my modifications as proof that I am following the IEP. (Essentially, covering my butt.)
